The essentials of Home Business

by Alan Pescud

As with many things in life there are just a small number of basic elements that if mastered lead to a profitable and thriving home business. The basics we will discuss here are – Product or service, marketing, delivery methods, accounting, coordination and planning and the business of business.

Accounting-financial management. For any business to survive and thrive it must have its lifeblood- cash- well controlled. This is even more important for a home business where sources of additional capital may be limited. The bean counter may not be one of the more glamour roles you either do or outsource as a small business owner – but rest assured, it deserves its place among the essentials.

Marketing – if they do not know about your marvellous product or service they will not come and get it. Seems clear when you put it like that but marketing tends to end up at either one end of the scale or the other. What I mean by that is that there are those who think marketing is everything and neglect the other elements of a successful home business. There are also those who think that if their product or service is good enough the marketing will take care of itself. Both are mistakes. Marketing is necessary, but it needs the backup provided by all the other essentials.

Product or Service – Have you got what they want? Some so called advertising experts and copywriters say if you advertise well enough people will buy. While this may be true to some extent it does not tell the full story. If you operate like this you may end up with some sales but you will not make customers and your probability of your home business making repeat sales drops accordingly.

Methods of Delivery. Not just the deliver of goods or services but the whole interaction of your home business with your customers. Is the ordering process easy? Do the customers of your home business know what to expect and do you regularly delight them by delivering more than this?

Taking care of business or the business of business. There are a myriad of administrative, legal and other requirements that need to be taken care of. Your home business may need licences, have health and safety considerations, and then there are the environmental factors – is your home business environment conducive to efficient production. These things and many others are in the category of those that will not make your home business flourish but if they are not done properly can cause it to flounder.

Planning and Coordination. No matter how well each of the other parts of your home business function individually, they will do much better when they are planned and coordinated with each other into a fully working whole. Planning is partly about the goals for your home business and the resources required to achieve them but the coordination element ensures that the parts work together.

So in conclusion, the successful home business is made of the essential elements of marketing, accounting, product or service, delivery methods, coordination or planning and the business of business. These elements put together and aimed squarely at a target market will surely make a successful home business just as the right ingredients for a cake properly baked will surely result in delicious eating.

While a business may survive for a time without an element or two, it is unlikely to last for long. If massive success in your home business is your goal then it is best to ensure you take care of all the elements.
